Citrix unveils new XenApp and XenDesktop 7.18 with powerful new features

Citrix recently unveiled the new versions of its XenApp and XenDesktop platforms. XenApp and XenDesktop 7.18 are now available to those who have active Customer Success Services (CSS). Citrix also offers dedicated support services for those looking to make the switch from XenApp 6.5. These new offerings include a number of new and exciting features for IT admins and end users. Here are some of the most notable updates.

New enhancements for users with XenApp and XenDesktop 7.18

For end users, XenApp and XenDesktop 7.18 brings about a number of productivity and usability improvements. The first is the ability to plug in a webcam during active application or desktop sessions and enjoy instant recognition and activation without having to close the virtual application or desktop, which was required in the past. The virtual desktops now also include battery status visibility, so you can keep up with the power level of your physical device even within a virtual environment. For Citrix Insiders who use a Microsoft Surface Pro or Book Pen, there’s a new functionality that lets you use virtual INK-based apps to enjoy stylus functionality. The update also improves smart card logins and in-session usage, which can be especially helpful for field workers who have to deal with challenging network conditions. And finally, new progressive display enhancements automatically detect high latency or low bandwidth and intelligently reduce image quality in an effort to improve interactivity and responsiveness, even when users are in challenging network conditions.

New enhancements for IT admins

For the IT pros, XenApp and XenDesktop 7.18 offer features that help to automate processes and improve support. For example, a new application probing and reporting feature lets Platinum edition admins install multiple probes to automate system health checks. There’s also new support for browser content redirection and authentication, which basically gives you the ability to whitelist websites that require SSO through Identity Providers. Within Citrix Director, a new interactive sessions enhancement offers insights into user login times and more. Additional features include machine creation services for Linux App and Desktop VDAs and new built-in alert policies for Citrix Director, among others.
