If your organization has embraced the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) model, allowing employees to use their own personal smart phones, tablets and laptops at work, you need to be aware of and concerned with company data that might still reside on those devices when it comes time for their owners to upgrade and get rid of them – even if they have ostensibly been “wiped.”
An identity theft expert did an experiment with alarming results: half of the devices he bought on Craigslist still contained information left there by the previous owner. This was true even though most had been restored to factory settings. Ouch.
