ULLtra DIMM – The latest in flash architecture

ULLtraDIMM SSDs

The companies SanDisk and Diablo Technologies have come together to create what they’re calling ULLtra DIMM SSD. The ULLtra name comes from Ultra Low Latency as they avoid the bottleneck of the SCSI and PCIe buses by going directly through the memory channel. These DIMMs currently come in 200GB and 400GB sizes which means it will be possible to fit several terabytes worth of local flash in a single server. This could mean great things for mixed workload/application environments commonly seen within the virtual infrastructure. Though currently this is probably not a solution for your typical SMB or maybe even enterprise, a good target is Big Data, high frequency financial trading, and large VDI environments.
