This week kicks off a geek movie lover’s paradise!

I never used to be much of a “superhero movie” kind of guy, but in the past few years, I’ve become a big fan of many of the superhero movies that have hit the big screen, including the Dark Knight Trilogy, Iron Man, and the Avengers. I like the way that modern superhero movies build their stories as they’re a bit less “campy” than we’ve seen in the past. This summer, movie fans — and comic book lovers everywhere — are being treated to what will probably be a huge summer movie season.  I can say with certainty that my kids and I will be spending a lot of quality time in movie theatre seats starting this weekend.

The list of movies below is just a snippet of what’s coming this summer.  Personally, I’m most excited for Iron Man 3, Star Trek Into Darkness and Man of Steel, but I plan to see Epic and R.I.P.D., too.  I may see Wolverine, but, although I love the X-Men movies, I haven’t really enjoyed the standalone Wolverine stuff.

  • May 3 – Iron Man 3
  • May 17 – Star Trek Into Darkness
  • May 24 – Epic
  • Jun 7 – After Earth
  • Jun 14 – Man of Steel
  • Jun 21 – World War Z
  • Jul 12 – Pacific Rim
  • Jul 19 – R.I.P.D.
  • Jul 26 – The Wolverine

As for Star Trek, I’ve always been a huge fan and am looking forward to seeing what J.J. brings us this summer.  I enjoyed the 2009 movie as well.  That said, even though the characters are the same and the ships are the same, the stories we’re getting from Abrams aren’t “my father’s Star Trek.”  On the upside, it’s brought more people into the franchise and reinvigorated it.  On the downside, the “heart” of Star Trek isn’t present in the new incarnation.  My fervent hope is that J.J., if and when it comes time to bring Star Trek back to TV, appoints a showrunner that truly understands what Star Trek is and can meld what J.J. has brought to us with what Star TRek used to be.

What are your thoughts and what will you see this summer?
