One of the new announcements alongside vSphere 5, was a licensing change announcement. This new licensing announcement got a lot of people riled up. In vSphere 4.1, a customer that configured all the RAM on a 128-GB, two-socket server only needed two licenses. With vSphere 5, that customer will need three licenses. This is bad news for VDI environments. So shortly after the initial announcement, VMware made a followup announcement that there would be a special vSphere Desktop License. So, how do the number stack up with all this license shuffle? Brian Madden put together some raw numbers to demonstrate and to point out some caveats about upgrades.
