Bandwidth Control for ISA Firewalls

I was thinking about ideas for articles to write in 2009 and it occurred to me that I hadn’t done anything on bandwidth control applications for the ISA firewall. As you might know, after the 2000 ISA firewall, bandwidth control has been absent from the firewall’s feature set.

This has been a problem for more than a few users, and there have been a smooth stream of requests to return this feature to ISA with new versions. I don’t know if that’s ever going to happen. However, until it does, there is a good option available to ISA firewall admins — Bandwidth Splitter.

Bandwidth Splitter is a full featured bandwidth shaping application for the ISA firewall. You can use it to create bandwidth shaping policies as well as create bandwidth quotas. With the demise of Deterministic Networks, Bandwidth Splitter is pretty much your only alternative for bandwidth control on the ISA firewall.

I was about to start the article and while doing some research, I found that someone else had already wrote one! Adrian Dimcev did a great job in reviewing the product in his article A Bandwidth Manager for ISA 2006 Firewall : Bandwidth Splitter at http://www.carbonwind.net/ISA/BwdSplit/BwdSplit.htm

So, instead of me re-discovering the wheel , your best bet is to head on over to Adrian’s site and read his article. If you have any questions about Bandwidth Splitter, you’re welcome to post comments to this blog and I’ll do my best to answer them.
