Traditionally, enterprise networks have relied on expensive third party security tools for protection. Over the years, however, Microsoft has started building more and more security features – firewall, antimalware and antivirus, encryption technologies – into the operating systems. Not only do these tools incur no extra cost, they’re also easier to incorporate.
Now some companies are investigating whether Microsoft’s built-in security mechanisms are “good enough” for enterprise protection and although this article refers to Forefront (most of which was effectively killed as of December 1, with some of the functionalities integrated into server products such as Exchange, SharePoint and Lync), the premise is still worth reading about:
