Richard Hicks asked me a few weeks ago what the value was for the “flag for attention” feature that’s part of the NIS feature set. From what I could tell, it was something that you could manually set if you wanted to pay particular attention to a certain signature, or have it flag automatically. Either way, there is no change in functionality.
However, it appears the story is a bit deeper than that. No, based functionality and protection isn’t changed based on the flag, but the flagging behavior itself changes depending on whether or not you’re using the default Microsoft policy or not.
