Virtualization of Microsoft applications is almost SOP

The virtualization of tier 1 Microsoft applications is exploding. In fact, if you’re heavily invested in Microsoft and have yet to virtualize Exchange, SQL Server or SharePoint, you’re now in the minority.

Network World recently published the results of a VMware customer survey that revealed that more than half of respondents have now virtualized some or all of their Exchange environments. For SQL Server, that percentage moves into the mid-60’s. SharePoint deployments, however, still lag behind these numbers, but I would not be at all surprised to see virtual deployment of SharePoint 2010 skyrocket.

Virtualization of these hefty, mission critical workloads shows just how far we’ve come with virtualization and indicates that organizations want the benefits that come with virtualization to be extended across the entire application stack.
