Back in the Windows XP timeframe you could "slipstream" a Windows service pack into the operating system. Beginning with Windows Vista however, slipstreaming is no longer supported.
In other words, if you are using MDT 2010 to deploy Windows 7, you will not be able to inject SP1 offline in the way you import software updates into the Deployment Workbench. Instead, you can use one of the following four approaches:
- Obtain an integrated installation of Windows 7 SP1 from the Microsoft Volume Licensing website when this becomes available and use it to deploy Windows 7 SP1 to your target machines using MDT.
- Use MDT to deploy Windows 7 RTM to your target machines, then let these machines install SP1 from Windows Update.
- Download SP1 when it becomes available, and then use MDT to deploy Windows 7 RTM to your target machines with your task sequence modified to install the service pack after Windows installation completes.
- Use MDT to deploy Windows 7 RTM, install SP1 online with the OS running, then sysprep and capture an image of Windows7 SP1 and import the captured image into the Deployment Workbench for deployment to your target machines.
