Microsoft announced that they have released a public preview of a SQL Server connector that will allow connections to Azure Key Vault. This will allow users to separate the key management facilities from the actual SQL Server itself. They note that by putting the master encryption keys into an independent system, you benefit from higher security because of the separate management infrastructures for the data versus keys.
