Apple just unveiled its all-new lineup of iPhones along with a slew of other product announcements. The Cupertino, Calif.-based tech giant announced four new handsets for this, its 13th iteration of iPhones. Launched at yesterday’s “California Streaming” event were the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Apple also announced the all-new Apple Watch Series 7, new iPad, iPad mini, alongside other software and service updates. These new iPhones are 5G compatible, pack in better imaging capabilities, have newer and brighter displays, and improved innards for efficiency and performance.
iPhone 13
While there hasn’t been a major change in terms of the design of these new iPhones, they do pack in a bunch of new features. The all-new iPhone 13 and the smaller iPhone 13 mini sports a durable flat-edge design are built with aerospace-graded aluminum casing. These devices also come with a ceramic shield that Apple says is tougher than any smartphone glass.
Both handsets have a Super Retina XDR display with a peak brightness of 1200 nits. The iPhone 13 sports a 6.1-inch display, while its smaller sibling, the iPhone 13 mini, has a 5.4-inch display. Under the hood, both devices are powered by Apple’s own A15 Bionic chipset that, according to Apple, is capable of up to 50% faster CPU processing than the other leading competitors in the smartphone segment. These handsets also have a 4-core CPU for better visuals and graphic rendering.
As far as the imaging is concerned, Apple at the event announced that both handsets feature the company’s most advanced dual-camera system ever. These devices come with a dual 12MP camera system consisting of a wide and ultrawide camera setup. Apple borrowed its sensor-shift Optical Image Stabilization technology from the previous year’s iPhone 12 Pro for the new iPhone 13. On top of regular improvements for low-light photography, better photographic styles, lens correction, and true tone flash, Apple introduced Cinematic Mode in this year’s iPhones. Cinematic Mode enables users to shift the focus onto different subjects in real-time intelligently through powerful computational algorithms.
Apple also emphasized that these handsets have better battery life. Apple said the iPhone 13 would last 2.5 hours more than the previous iPhone 12. On the other hand, the iPhone 13 mini is expected to last 1.5 hours more than the iPhone 12 mini. Both devices offer 128GB of internal storage, which is a good jump from the 64GB base storage variants in the previous iPhones.
As for colors, the iPhone 13 is available in Product Red, Starlight, Midnight, Blue, and Pink. The iPhone 13 starts at $799, while the smaller mini variant starts at $699.
iPhone 13 Pro
Apple followed last year’s trend to unveil four different devices that include two pro variants. Accordingly, Apple unveiled the iPhone 13 Pro (6.1-inch display) alongside the bigger iPhone 13 Pro Max (6.7-inch display) at the event. As with the iPhone 13 and 13 mini, the Pro versions come with a ceramic shield front for durability. Both feature Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion. ProMotion allows the device to achieve a refresh rate of 10Hz-120Hz, dynamically adapting and adjusting depending on usage to save battery life while providing a fluid visual experience.
These two handsets also feature Apple’s latest A15 Bionic chip with a 6-core CPU consisting of two performance and four efficiency cores. They also feature an all-new 5-core GPU alongside a 16-core Neural Engine capable of handling 15.8 trillion operations per second.
According to Apple, the iPhone 13 Pro camera system received the company’s biggest upgrade ever in terms of imaging. The triple camera setup on the iPhone 13 Pro consists of 12MP telephoto, wide, and ultrawide cameras. For the first time, all these three cameras are night-mode enabled for better low-light photography. The ultrawide sensor is capable of macro photography, and the telephoto sensor sports a 3x optical zoom. Moreover, the ultrawide sensor can now record macro video in slow-motion, and the device supports Cinematic Mode for depth mapping the video on the go. Apple also announced that these devices would get ProRes Video for more powerful and efficient video encoding later this year. The new photographic styles, including real-time photo edits and multiframe image processing pipeline with the ability to customize, will be a major upgrade to this year’s iPhones.
Both these devices will be available in Graphite, Gold, Silver, and Sierra Blue color variants with an option to upgrade to 1TB of onboard storage. As far as the pricing is concerned, the iPhone 13 Pro starts at $999 for the base 128GB variant, while the larger Pro Max variant starts at $1,099.
Availability
Users can start pre-ordering these devices starting Sept. 17 and will be available to purchase in stores starting Sept. 24. Apple also announced all-new iPads, Apple Watch Series 7, and more, which we will be covering in a separate story. Although there isn’t much difference in the design and overall look and feel of the devices, Apple has introduced more powerful cameras, better and brighter displays, and some good feature updates in the new iPhone lineup.
