Angler has a new angle

According to a report on the ThreatPost security news site, attackers using Angler, one of the most popular exploit kits, in new and more effective ways to target popular web sites for distribution. That means more users than ever are being exposed to the kit’s ransomeware infestations.

One of the most recent sites where Angler was found is ExtendOffice.com, which provides Microsoft Office customization software such as Office Tabs and Kutools for Excel. It’s a Chinese site but attracts many Office users who find its add-ins useful. SANS Internet Storm Center has also seen Joomla sites being targeted by exploit kits lately.

To make things worse, the new version of Angler is able to avoid detection by some anti-malware software such as SpiderMonkey in Firefox.
